Frequently Asked Questions > Airconsole - Other Apps

Can I use Airconsole with other iOS terminal apps - i.e. like iSSH or Prompt

Yes. But why would you want to ?? :) While we support Airconsole with our applications (Get Console, RapidSSH and Private Server), Airconsole also presents its serial port via the industry standard RFC2177 Serial-over-Telnet protocol. The serial port can be configured via the "Network Virtual Terminal" extensions to RFC2177 and can be connected via telnet to the Airconsole's IP address on TCP port 3696. Other application developers can encode support for RFC2177 and NVT into their apps and they will then be able to offer Serial port connectivity in their terminal apps, in fact for iOS developers we offer an SDK to integrate Airconsole serial port connectivity quickly into their apps. See the Airconsole page Resources for more information.

It is not possible to connect to Airconsole via Bluetooth with apps other than our supported Get Console, RapidSSH and SerialBot apps. This is because we use a proprietary Bluetooth low energy protocol - there is no standard BLE protocol for serial port available.

Can I connect to Airconsole serial port via a PC or Mac Terminal app (ie SecureCRT, Putty, Zterm etc)?

Yes. While we support Airconsole with our applications (Get Console, RapidSSH and Private Server), Airconsole also  presents its serial ports via the industry standard RFC2177 Serial-over-Telnet protocol. The serial port can be configured via the "Network Virtual Terminal" extensions to RFC2177 and can be connected via telnet to the Airconsole's IP address on TCP port 3696 or for raw support on TCP 2167.

We publish links on the Airconsole page to freeware PC software that builds virtual COM port connections to RFC2177 compliant serial-over-IP adaptors. We will also make available similar software for Mac OSX. Once the serial port is available to the operating system as a COM port or kernel device, it can be connected to via the users choice of terminal application (ie Zterm, SecureCRT, PuTTY etc). HW Group drivers are known to work well with Airconsole on PC.

 Android Support

Airconsole works with our free lightweight Android terminal client "SerialBot". SerialBot is a port of an existing opensource Android terminal called ConnectBot. SerialBot adds support for dynamically discovering and using the Airconsole serial port directly from the terminal client as if connected with a physical cable. For more information on SerialBot, check it out on Google Play
