says for later firmware revisions I should upgrade using "...the built in web based updater at http://<Airconsole IP>/firmware.asp"

I'm running firmware v2.03, but get the following error when trying to open it.

Access error: Site or Page Not Found
Cannot open URL

Is there a web-based updater, or should I use a USB stick as before?

If you go your airconsole web page and navigate to Admin->Firmware does the page load (it should!) - the URL shouldn't have changed. I will check it.
