Bit Rate speed increase to 115200

Postby aix42day » Wed Dec 14, 2011 7:57 pm

Many RS-232 devices out there want to talk at this speed...

Hi aix42day

The serial pins on the 30 pin dock connector on the Apple iOS device only support 57600 which is why its currently limited, however we are working on something to hopefully get around this limitation that will enable 115200 and higher speeds. More soon.

Thanks
Simon

The 115200 limitation is not anything we actually have control over in the code. IF the cable could do it, we could just turn it on. The Redpark C2-RJ45 cable connects to the Apple iPhone via the serial lines within the 30pin connector and these lines are limited by the Apple hardware to 57.6k.

For a bit of extra info: The Redpark RJ45 cable has active electronics in it - it talks an Apple proprietary / encrypted encapsulation method between iPhone and Cable, and allows our app access to the serial port at a speed via a published API. This API doesn't provide any method to request 115200 speed. The highest we can request is 57600.

We thought there might be some hack that overrides this limitation, that we could trick the redpark cable into going faster - after all it has a MAX232 chip in it that can run much faster than 115200 even, but it turns out that really its the serial pins on the Apple iPad/iPhone that are the problem and we cant see a way around it at the moment.

Therefore we think the only way to get 115200 will be with a different cable that uses different physical connection within the 30 pin connector to the iPhone. We hope Redpark or other cable manufacture will come up with one very soon.

When we started making Get Console, it was for Cisco equipment - the 115200 limitation was of no concern to us as 9600 was all that is required. As we accept and officially support more vendors equipment now, as well as some very new Cisco equipment defaulting to 115200 its an issue that is top of our list to find a solution for - we think there is one in the works but it wont be a "software upgrade" for Get Console that is going to solve it. We will announce more when we know.

Redpark have released a new version of the C2-RJ45 cable called "C2-RJ45-V" - we will receive stock of these next week. These cables are capable of 115200 baud (the option will be available in Get Console settings next week as well). It will only work with this new cable as this cable has different hardware that is capable of the higher speeds.

The only downside to this new cable (its a small one) - it will require iOS 5.0 or later and will not work on iPhone 3G. All other Apple iOS devices after that which can support iOS 5 (ie iPhone 3GS, iPad1,2 and 3, and iPod Touch 4th Gen and later) will work.

Thanks for your patience
Simon Hope
