Airconsole wont boot with usb console cable

Hi all,
has anyone else had a similar problem, the device with nothing attached boots fine and can log in, as soon as you attach the blue USB>Rj45 cable the unit powers off or fails to boot if already connected.
I don't know if this is a faulty supplied cable.
To test it wasn't a physical problem I've connected a usb pen and the Airconsole stays on...
To confirm, my cable is the short dark blue version instead of the light blue version. mine has a square usb moulding (not rounded).
There's no obvious damage and pins are intact, however just for fun, ive plugged this cable into my mac to see if anything happens and Yosemite tells me that the device is using to much power and disabled the ports (this might be the norm?)
I've contacted support yesterday and still awaiting a reply
Thanks
